THE transformation of an area of wasteland near Well Road into a play park wonderland was completed at an opening ceremony at the weekend. On Saturday the play park was formally unveiled by the chairwoman of The Return of Well Road Play Park group, Rachel Cormack, bringing to an end a grassroots campaign which saw more than £60,000 raised. Speaking to the Advertiser, Ms Cormack said: “It’s absolutely fantastic to see this just 18 months after we started the group. “We can’t thank everyone enough who has supported us.” Financial backers were: Buckie Common Good Fund; Buckie Developer Obligations; Beatrice Partnership Fund; Scotmid; Landfill Tax Fund; Bucks4Buckie; Buckie Classic car Show. Special thanks went to Councillors Sonya Warren, Tim Eagle and Gordon Cowie, Tracey Rae from Moray Council’s Community Support Unit and Buckie and District Community Council. Councillor Warren said: “This has been a tremendous grassroots campaign to transform a wasteland area into a first class play park. “We should all be very proud of them, it’s been a privilege to have worked with them.” Councillor Eagle said: “This is a truly wonderful example of the community empowering themselves to make their area better .” Councillor Cowie added: “My admiration goes out to this small group of dedicated volunteers in
getting this project going.” MSP Stewart Stevenson, who has already lodged a motion of congratulation for the play park committee at the Scottish Parliament, said: “It’s terrific to see this much needed play park opening in the heart of the town,” he continued. Protect Our Park (POP) has taken on the running of the park. Email wellroadpark@gmail.com for more information.
