SCOTTISH Water has completed a £700,000 project to reduce the risk of flooding in Buckie. Months of upheaval and road closures in and around the St Peter’s Road, St Peter’s Terrace and Sutherland Crescent area has finally come to fruition. Delivered by Scottish Water’s Alliance Partner, amey-Black & Veatch (aBV), the main aim of the project was to improve the sewer network by increasing the capacity of the sewer pipe and reducing the risk of flooding. Concerns had been building over the last few years that the existing system was unable to cope with the heavy and persistent periods of rain which have hit the area at times. The scheme involved the installation of 250m of new, larger diameter sewer pipe which began at St Peter’s Primary School along St Peter’s Terrace, across Land Street, on to St Peter’s Road to the final connection point in Sutherland Crescent. Gavin Steel, corporate affairs manager for Scottish Water, said: “This was an important project to ensure the sewer network continues to serve our customers in Buckie and protect the local environment, with reduced risk of flooding during storm conditions. “While working on site, our Alliance Partner worked hard to minimise disruption for local residents. As a result, they were able to deliver the work smoothly, safely and on time. “We would like to thank the community in Buckie for their understanding and support as this essential work was completed.” Ross Cumming, aBV project manager, added: “We are pleased that this project is now complete, reducing the risk of flooding for a number of properties in Buckie. Despite the complex challenges of the project, we are pleased to have been able to deliver the work quickly and safely, for the benefit of the local community.”
