MacAskill up for leading Jags attack

PLAYING Andy MacAskill in a more natural attacking role helped Buckie Thistle pull off a thrilling comeback at Turriff on Saturday. The former “Turra” man netted twice against his old team as Jags came from 2-0 and 3-1 down to earn a point at the Haughs. Buckie boss Graeme Stewart was happy to let MacAskill off the leash and play him in a more advanced role, with the move paying off handsomely. “When we’ve got everyone fit, we know Andy’s best position is going to be in the forward two or three positions,” said Stewart. “We’ve had to play him in midfield with so many boys being out. “So it was good for him to get further forward and I think he enjoyed the game more playing in a more natural position, as his two goals prove.” Stewart was far from happy with his team’s first-half display when they trailed to a home side hampered by a red card inside the opening 10 minutes. By then Turriff were already 1-0 up thanks to Dylan Stuart’s early strike. But in the eighth minute Turriff defender Luke Kinsella appeared to slide in with both feet on Buckie’s Craig Cowie, prompting a straight red card from referee Chris Fordyce. Jags couldn’t find a way past the 10 men at first, and early in the second half they went 2-0 down through an Angus Grant goal. Two minutes later the visitors were awarded a penalty and although MacAskill’s kick was saved by keeper Fraser Hobday, the Buckie man followed up to score. That could have sparked a Jags revival but instead Turriff managed another goal, a free kick from ex-Buckie defender Ross Anderson. Crucially Buckie sub Sam Robertson quickly got a goal back, and they piled the pressure on before being rewarded by a MacAskill equaliser on 83 minutes. Jags were also reduced to 10 men late in the match, young defender Sam Morrison dismissed for a last-man challenge. “Their goalkeeper was probably man of the match. He had three or four saves late on when we were doing all the pressing,” said Stewart. “We should have won the game but credit to the lads for battling back for a draw. Jags finish with a trip to Strathspey on Saturday.
