Jags seal deal with midfield star McKenna

BUCKIE Thistle have added vast experience to their ranks by signing former Turriff midfielder Aaron McKenna. McKenna has returned from a spell in Australian football to pen a deal with Jags until the end of the season. A former team-mate of current Buckie man Andy MacAskill at both Turriff and Australian side Holland Park Hawks, the central midfielder comes straight into Buckie’s squad for their trip to Fraserburgh this weekend. “I remember playing against Aaron and he’s quality,” said Jags’ boss Graeme Stewart. “He will make a difference to our team so I was delighted to get him over the line. “He’s just come back from playing in Australia. He’s 28 or 29 now but he had a few years at Turriff before then and he’s a very good player. “We didn’t go actively to sign someone but when someone of his quality becomes available then you’ve got to make your move.” McKenna could help Jags’ bid to make it six league wins in a row this weekend. Consecutive victory number
five arrived on Saturday, a 2-0 success at home to Clach. Assistant manager Lewis MacKinnon nodded Buckie into the lead just before half time, though he later limped off with a groin strain which makes him a doubt for the Fraserburgh game. A stunning 30 yarder by sub
Craig Dorrat in his return game from injury sealed the points with 20 minutes left. “It was pretty comfortable,” said Stewart. “Our goalie never really had a save to make but you would rather have the second or even a third goal just to make it more comfortable. “That’s five in a row now so we are on a decent run. We’ve got a huge game this Saturday at Fraserburgh, that will be a good test for us to see where we are and we are going to have to be near our best to get a result there.” Jags fans were delighted to see the return of defender Shaun Wood to the starting
line-up after missing all of last season due to cruciate ligament surgery. Craig Cowie is currently on loan at Buckie Rovers recovering from the same injury while Sam Urquhart is a month away from his comeback. Last week Buckie discovered that Ceiran McLean was the latest to rupture his cruciate, and he faced at least a year on the sidelines. Jay Cheyne underwent an ankle operation on Monday and will be out for eight weeks. n Buckie’s under-18s take on Turriff in the Scottish Youth Cup at Victoria Park tomorrow (kickoff 8pm).
