Hearing specialist marks milestone

A BUCKIE audiologist has celebrated 40 years of looking after people’s hearing. Jo Farquhar, who is managing director and clinical lead audiologist with Moray Hearing Care in Cluny Square, hosted an afternoon of reminisces and refreshments to celebrate the milestone. Her career began on September 26, 1978 when she started her training as a student physiological measurement technician (audiology) at Addenbrooke’s Hospital in Cambridge. She moved to Scotland in 2008 and started Moray Hearing in June the following year in the back room of the now Buckpool Pharmacy along with some home visits. The business to its current home in Cluny Square in February 2014. Jo has been a council member of the British Society of Hearing Aid Audiologists and was the last chairman of the British Society of Hearing Therapists. Since 2014 Moray Hearing Centre has been recognised by the Association of Independent Hearing Healthcare Professionals as a centre of excellence, one of only two in Scotland and she was the first person to obtain the BSHAA Diploma in clinical Ear Care Practice in 2011 and undertook microsuction training for ear wax removal in 2017. Jo said: “The changes in technology over the last 40 years have been amazing. Having gone from initially fitting large and bulking body worn hearing aids and even the occasional ear trumpet (the last trumpet she issued was in 1987) we now have hearing aids that stream phone and music straight to the hearing aids. “Research is bringing us closer to a cure for tinnitus and hearing healthcare is becoming more acceptable.”
