Last Wednesday afternoon saw club president of 30 years Mary Reid hand over a cheque for £864 to Portknockie Community Association (PCA) chairman John Going. The cash is earmarked to support large-scale refurbishment and improvement works to the village’s Millennium Garden in a bid to transform it in time for summer. Mr Going told the Advertiser: “We’re very grateful to the Seniors for this donation. “The Millennium Garden needs freshening up and we want it to be a focal point of the village for locals and visitors to come in and enjoy. “This donation will help us achieve this. It’s a fitting legacy, I think, for the group that their funds will be part of something the village will be proud of.” Mrs Reid said: “It’s obviously sad that the Portknockie Seniors is no more but on the other hand, we’re delighted that our money is making such a practical and visible contribution to Portknockie.” The group first started life in 1952 as Portknockie Old Age Pensioners, with 120 people attending their inaugural meeting. However, over the last couple of years members have faded away and not been replaced by new, younger ones. The Seniors decided to call it a day last year when membership hit 38.
