Council report.
MORAY has agreed to contribute more than £20 million to build a huge incinerator in Aberdeen that will burn rubbish from north-east households. The futuristic-looking £150 million facility is a joint venture with Aberdeen City Council and Aberdeenshire Council. Moray Council met in private last Monday and gave its approval to the project. The other two councils also held the same meeting in public last. The incinerator will burn up 150,000 tonnes of waste every year, generating both electricity for the national grid and heat for nearby homes. It is scheduled to be completed by April 2022. A consortium led by the Spanish building firm Acciona is currently in poll position to build the incinerator, which will be sited within the East Tullos industrial estate. The contract will be awarded later this year. The Scottish Government stated in 2013 that it would introduce a ban in January 2021 on sending biodegradable waste to landfill.
