THERE was a jolly festive first for Buckie on Sunday when Cluny Square rang out to songs of the season. From 2.30pm through to 4pm Buckie and District Community Choir (BDCC) held shoppers and bystanders entranced with their inaugural Carols in the Square concert. People of all ages stopped by to join in with some Christmas classics or to just simply enjoy the singing. In addition to the singing
Santa and his little helpers were on hand, much to the delight of younger visitors to the square. Many shops in the centre of Buckie stayed open during the afternoon. The lack of event of this kind in the town was to provide the spark of inspiration behind the concert, as choir chairwoman Kathleen Thompson explained.
“Our musical director, Jane Murray, first came up with the idea and when she suggested it
to the choir it was agreed that
there was nothing like this locally where family and friends could enjoy community singing of well-known carols,” she told the Advertiser. “The choir committee, along with our sound engineer, DJ Paul T and Gifford Leslie at Struan House guest house on Cluny Square got together to plan the concert. Gifford approached local shops to see if they’s stay open and he also organised a bottle stall. “Choir members are always keen to take on new exciting ventures and this one has hopefully touched the hearts of local folks as we celebrated with the whole community the meaning of Christmas.

Even before the concert public reaction was overwhelming, in particular the Co-op giving us a very generous gift towards Santa gifts for the local children attending the event.

Proceeds from the collection taken on the day are destined for Friends of Buckie Square.
