BOLD plans to upgrade Cullen Community and Residential Centre have received a large four-figure boost thanks to the National Lottery’s Awards for All scheme. The Three Kings Cullen Association (TKCA), who run the centre on behalf of the wider community, had plenty to celebrate last week when it was confirmed they had been handed a grant of £6500 which will help fund the creation of a new suite of toilets. It is a move which will allow greater accessibility for many different types of users, TKCA chairwoman Brenda Gifford told the Advertiser. “At the moment we don’t have separate toilets for the community user groups and residential centre users. “This means we’ve no real way of allowing residential users to go to the toilet without first having to go through the hall. “The result is we can’t book residential groups and user groups at the same time. “This grant, for which we are very grateful and delighted to receive, will allow us create new toilets near the front of the building where the old office used to be. “We are looking to create a disabled toilet plus one or two other ones; the location is ideal as it allows them to be accessed independently of the hall, it gives space and privacy for disabled users and already has the water and drainage in place. “These are going to make a real difference and give us a lot more flexibility with our bookings, it will satisfy the needs of two important groups of users.” Mrs Gifford noted that while a building warrant had still to be obtained before work commenced she was hopeful that this could be dealt with soon, the local authority having already been consulted on the project and come back with favourable opinions. She went on to say that this was the first phase of a centre-wide development project which would see plans put out to public consultation is due course,
although the TKCA were “nowhere near” that stage yet.
